Modern Times

Poetry Not Taken Too Seriously
Modern Times
It is redundant to write, “whether or not.”
“Whether” says as much in less time.
Yet it saved me from getting tied in a knot,
Searching for a nice little rhyme.

It is sexist to say you are lovely.
I shouldn’t notice those sparkling eyes.
Women are free, and so might you be,
If I’d just stop admiring your thighs.

Free speech is a wonderful thing.
Of this, we all seem to agree.
Unless what is said has a dangerous ring
Or is in some way offensive to me.

Abortion was never reviled by Jesus.
On homosexuality, he offered no tips.
Yet it’s easy to hate and let anger seize us,
Think he was betrayed by another man’s lips.

The world can’t be redeemed or saved,
Merely tweaked a bit about the edges.
But the worst can be staved, the best craved,
And it’s fun to make love in the hedges.

All I want is to be free to think like this,
And to rest ‘neath a starry sky,
Rise to a smile and a gentle kiss.
All else is a damnable lie.
